CodeTantra and ExamX both turn up on Indian shortlists for online exam software, and they are an awkward pair to compare feature by feature. CodeTantra is a virtual university: live classes, an LMS, coding labs and proctored exams in one product, with engineering education as its home ground. ExamX by Greatify is an exam platform and nothing else — it writes the paper, delivers it, proctors it, evaluates it (handwritten answers included) and publishes the results. One is broad. The other is deep. Which fits depends on what you are trying to fix.

This article goes dimension by dimension with a verdict on each, and it says plainly where CodeTantra is the better choice — including the things ExamX does not do at all, such as coding labs and live classes. Every CodeTantra capability below comes from its own public pages as read in September 2026. Where CodeTantra publishes nothing, we write “not stated publicly” instead of guessing.
Two platforms, two different jobs
CodeTantra is a Hyderabad company founded in 2014 with, in its own words, “the original aim of inculcating software coding skills among youth”. It signed its first customer in 2018 and now sells a teaching platform it describes as “a Learning Management System on steroids”, an assessment platform with remote proctoring, programming courses, test-prep banks and a video-conferencing tool for classes. The homepage tagline is “Your virtual university, in minutes!”, and the promise underneath is online classes, assessments, proctored exams, assignments, auto-grading and plagiarism checks in one platform. ExamX comes from the opposite direction. Greatify built it to take paper out of high-stakes examinations, so the product is the exam lifecycle and only that: AI question authoring, delivery on web and tablets, AI proctoring, AI evaluation of objective and descriptive answers, and analytics. There is no timetable, no fee module and no coding lab, because ExamX is not trying to be your campus. It is trying to be the place your exams run.
Verdict: this decision settles most of the others. If you want one login for teaching and testing, the LMS-first model wins by definition. If the problem is the exam itself — setting it, securing it, marking it, publishing results in days rather than weeks — an exam-first platform gets you further.
Question authoring
CodeTantra's authoring model is “bring or buy a bank, then configure”. Its homepage advertises “over 200 knobs to design and schedule tests”, bulk import of question banks (automatic for standardised templates, manual as a premium support service for ad hoc formats) and optional access to CodeTantra's own banks, which its about page says run to tens of thousands of questions across campus placements, GATE, TOEFL, GRE, ACT, SAT and GMAT. The question types are wide — programming in multiple languages, multiple-choice variants, fill in the blanks, numerical, match the columns, spoken English and comprehension, plus essays, viva voce and document upload — and the Android app listing adds scanned handwritten questions, formula and LaTeX input and voice answers. For coding problems and objective banks, it is a mature toolkit.
ExamX starts one step earlier. Faculty give it source content — lecture notes, a textbook chapter, a syllabus unit — and the AI generates a paper from it in 20+ question types with Bloom's-taxonomy coverage, so a department can ask for “four application-level questions on this chapter” instead of writing them. Generated items go into moderated question banks, and nothing reaches a live paper without a human approving it. CodeTantra's pages do not describe AI generation of questions from content.
Verdict: for coding assessments and pre-built objective banks, CodeTantra. For faculty who spend weeks writing descriptive papers by hand, ExamX's generation from content changes the workload in a way a bigger bank does not.
Exam delivery
CodeTantra delivers through the browser and an Android app. SASTRA University's 2021 student manual for proctored exams on the CodeTantra Virtual University platform lists Chrome on Windows, Mac, Linux and Android, and Safari 13 or later on iPhone and iPad. The app adds in-test help over audio, video, screen share and chat at low bandwidth, plus an SOS request. An offline exam mode, for halls where the connection drops mid-paper, is not stated publicly.
ExamX runs on web, iPad and Android inside a lockdown environment, with an offline mode so a dropped connection pauses nothing and loses nothing. The distinctive piece is the tablet: students write descriptive answers by hand with a stylus, which lets a university go paperless without asking anyone to type a three-hour essay. SRM ran roughly 2,000 tablets across five campuses this way.
Verdict: for typed, coding and objective exams on students' own devices, both deliver. For handwritten descriptive papers, and for exam halls where connectivity is a known risk, ExamX's tablet-native and offline design is the difference.
Proctoring
CodeTantra's proctoring is thorough on the recording side. Its homepage describes “composite recording and playback of all aspects of a test, including multiple cameras, screen, times, navigation activity, locations, answers, multiple audio streams”, plus “automatic blocking of bad actors with complete control for proctor to extend or terminate the test”. The Android app lists four modes — AI proctored, AI assisted, human proctored and non-proctored — and LPU's 2020 guide to its mid-term exams on CodeTantra told students an authorised person watches from the back end, with a video chat to the assigned proctor. What CodeTantra does not publish is a detection accuracy or false-positive rate, so its pages cannot tell you how much review work an exam week will generate.
ExamX publishes both numbers: 99.2% detection accuracy with under 0.1% false positives, at up to 100,000+ concurrent candidates. The AI verifies identity, tracks face and gaze, locks the browser and raises real-time alerts for multiple faces, device swaps and off-screen activity; every flag goes to a human reviewer and nothing is penalised automatically. What ExamX does not offer is a live human proctor in the session with the authority to intervene.
Verdict: if your senate or regulator requires a person watching the session live, CodeTantra lists that mode and ExamX does not. If you need automated integrity across an entire exam week, with a published accuracy and false-positive rate you can hold the vendor to, ExamX.
Evaluation
This is where the two products diverge most. CodeTantra auto-evaluates its coding, objective and comprehension question types, with evaluation audit trails and plagiarism reports. Subjective essays, viva voce and document uploads are listed as manually evaluated, and AI evaluation of handwritten descriptive answers is not stated publicly. For a college whose assessment is mostly code and objective items, that is a complete answer; for a university whose end-semester papers are five long-answer questions, the marking still happens the old way.
ExamX auto-scores objective questions and hands descriptive answers — including handwriting captured on the tablet — to rubric-aware AI that marks against the faculty's own scheme; the evaluator holds the final override. At SRM, answer scripts were ready to evaluate within about 10 minutes of each exam ending, against roughly a week on paper. The first cycle doubles as calibration: evaluators see the AI's marking beside the script and correct it.
Verdict: for auto-graded coding, CodeTantra — ExamX does not run coding labs. For descriptive papers, ExamX is the only one of the two that publishes AI evaluation of them.
Scale and proof
CodeTantra's evidence is breadth of adoption. Its homepage shows login portals for IIT Madras, IISER Pune, IISER Tirupati, LPU, SASTRA, Christ University, Bennett University, GITAM, Chandigarh University and others, labelled “a small subset of our customers”, and two of them have published their own material: LPU's September 2020 mid-term exam notice and SASTRA's May 2021 proctored-exam manual. CodeTantra also states that its teaching platform was selected by MHRD and AICTE “as one of a handful of EdTech companies” — that is the company's own claim. Concurrency figures and an uptime SLA are not stated publicly.
ExamX's evidence is one deployment with the numbers attached. SRM Institute of Science and Technology ran 80,000+ fully paperless exams across five campuses on ExamX: about 2,000 tablets, 45 days of continuous examinations, a peak of around 1,800 concurrent candidates, zero disruptions and more than 3 million sheets of paper eliminated. Verdict: both have real institutions behind them. CodeTantra's list shows it trusted for classes and proctored tests across many campuses; SRM shows what a paperless descriptive exam season looks like on ExamX in production. Ask both for reference calls with an institution like yours.
Security and compliance
CodeTantra's homepage lists two-factor authentication, organisational role-based access control, encryption in transit and at rest, and complete data isolation by domain. Those are sensible controls. What its pages do not carry is any third-party attestation — SOC 2, ISO 27001 or similar are not stated publicly, so a procurement committee cannot tick that box from the website alone. ExamX holds SOC 2, ISO 27001 and GDPR compliance alongside the 99.9% SLA.
Verdict: ask CodeTantra for its certification status before you score this row; it may hold more than it publishes. On the public record, ExamX is the one with independent attestation.
Pricing
Neither vendor publishes prices. CodeTantra's site routes buyers to a sales enquiry; ExamX quotes on request based on candidate volumes, exam formats and modules. Compare scenarios, not stickers: give both vendors the same number of students, exams per year and question formats, and ask what else you would still need to buy. If you would use CodeTantra's classes and coding labs, price that bundle against ExamX plus whatever you keep for teaching; if you only need exams, an exam-only quote is the fair comparison.
Which fits which institution?
Choose CodeTantra if you are an engineering college that wants live classes, coding labs, assignments and proctored tests behind one login, and auto-graded programming is the heart of your assessment. That is the job it was built for.
Choose ExamX if you are a university or board running high-stakes descriptive examinations and you want them paperless at scale — handwritten answers on tablets, AI proctoring with published accuracy, AI evaluation with faculty override, and results in days.
Run both if coding labs and descriptive papers both matter to you. There is no overlap to untangle: CodeTantra carries the term, ExamX carries the exam hall.
Can you use both?
Yes, and for some institutions that is the honest answer. CodeTantra's LMS, coding labs, assignments and quizzes run all semester; ExamX takes over for end-semester and high-stakes papers, where descriptive evaluation, proctoring accuracy and paperless logistics matter most. Students see CodeTantra in teaching weeks and ExamX in the exam hall, and nobody has to decide which product's proctoring to trust for which paper.
